A new coronavirus case reported from Kolkata today, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in West Bengal to 2. A 20-year-old patient, who had recently returned from the UK, tested positive for novel coronavirus, a state government official confirmed.

On Thursday, the patient was admitted to the Beliaghata ID Hospital with symptoms of coronavirus infection. Earlier this week, an 18-year-old diagnosed positive with COVID-19 infection in Kolkata. 7 people were admitted to the isolation ward of Beliaghata ID hospital with coronavirus symptoms. 

The total number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 214 after a record number of cases were reported from the various parts of the country on Thursday. India also witnessed its 5th coronavirus casualty.

As a record number of fresh cases emerge on Thursday, the Centre took some drastic steps to curb the coronavirus spread. India decided to not allow any international commercial passenger aircraft to land during 22-29 March. 

The central government also urged all states to issue directives to ensure that citizens above 65 years of age remain at home. State governments shall issue appropriate directions so that all citizens above 65 (other than for medical assistance) except for public representatives or government servants or medical professionals are advised to remain at home. 

Children below 10 years are advised to stay at home. The central government also requested states to enforce work from home for private-sector employees, except for those working in emergency and essential services.

In the wake of coronavirus scare in the country, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee directed all the schools, colleges, cinema halls in the state to remain closed till March 31.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to observe ‘Janata (public) Curfew’ on Sunday. During the curfew, people are requested to avoid public spaces and stay home for 14 hours in the view of the coronavirus outbreak which has killed over 8,000 people across the world. “On March 22, from 7 am to 9 pm, all countrymen have to follow the Janta Curfew,” PM Narendra Modi said.
